Each participant will work on a one-minute monologue and receive adjustments and advice from the instructor to bring your work to life.

Everyone is welcome to attend, no experience necessary. MENASA (Middle-Eastern, North African, South-Asian) artists will be given priority, but all are welcome to register.

Each participant will work on a 2-3 page scene and receive adjustments and advice from the instructor to make characters stand out and scenes pop.

Playwriting Class with Artistic Director Ann Ciccolella

After a success of two Zoom Playwriting series, Austin Shakespeare is offering a four-week online workshop beginning Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

Taught by Artistic Director Ann Ciccolella and culminating in an online showcase featuring professional actors performing dialogue from the scenes created by the participating playwrights through the workshop.

This workshop series encourages new writing as well as advocates revising past work(s). It focuses on building conflict between characters at the core of dialogue as patricipants refer to plays ranging from Stoppard to Shakespeare.

Participants have ranged from experienced playwrights to new-comers. All of them have learned from each other as well as from studying the work of master playwrights. - Ann Ciccolella.

 

ABOUT ANN CICCOLELLA: As a playwright, Ann Ciccolella had full productions of her scripts, Madame X, and Fruits and Vegetables from Austin’s Different Stages, and recently her adaptation of The Odyssey at the Long Center’s Rollins Theater. She has adapted and staged Checkov’s The Seagull, Ibsen’s Hedda, and is currently writing a version of Maeterlink’s Monna Vanna to be performed in August 2021. A graduate of NYU’s program in Dramatic Literature, and History of Theater, Ann has taught at the Department of Theater and Dance, UT Austin and St Edwards University.

Focusing on Diverse Actors: Making a Career in Theater

If you are an "actor of color," join this one time only class with Franchelle Dorn, who has had a career ranging from Austin Shakespeare to being named as a Distinguished professor of acting at University of Texas and for a major part of her career as a leading actress for The Shakespeare Theatre, DC, as well as in film and television.

Participants have the option of doing a prepared monologue or a reading of 1-2 minutes in length. A Q&A period will cover a range of topics.

Franchelle Stewart Dorn: As an actor, her credits include performances at Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arena Stage, American Conservatory Theatre, Yale Rep, Long Wharf, George Street Playhouse, Great Lakes Shakespeare Theater, Cleveland Playhouse, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Guthrie, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Penumbra. Most recently, Fran has been seen Off-Broadway at Red Bull Theatre and Signature Theatre. She appeared on television as Dr. Rita Madison on NBC’s Another World and as a host for PBS’ Working Women and Literary Visions. She has done more than 400 industrials, commercials, and voice-overs. Franchelle has been nominated for eight Helen Hayes Awards, winning three; Austin Critics’ Circle for Best Actor in a Play: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Edge of Peace, and Medea for Austin Shakespeare. She received her M.F.A. from Yale University. 

Fran's teaching has been recognized with the SFA Excellence in Teaching Award and she is part of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers and a Regents’ Outstanding Teacher. She was inducted into the National Theater Conference and the National Association of Acting Teachers.
